A Gente Cobra: a campaign by the Alliance of Peoples for the Climate

This new Brazilian initiative brings together Indigenous and traditional communities like quilombolas (communities of formerly enslaved people), extractivits, ribeirinhos (riverside), beiradeiros (riverbank dwellers) and urban youth leaders proposing a new paradigm for climate funding: direct, non-bureaucratic, and trust-based resources for communities who care for and preserve the biomes.

The main demands include the allocation of 50% of climate fund resources directly to peoples and traditional communities, deliberative participation in fund councils such as the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) and the Loss and Damage Fund (FRLD), the strengthening of autonomous community funds, global taxation of large fortunes and excessive profits to finance climate action.

KAMALUHAI

Aboard the KAMALUHAI, the Cobra Boat, 200 activists embarked on a symbolic and political journey along the Amazon rivers, carrying powerful messages of resistance and hope towards COP30 in Belém. The Peoples who are already facing the harshest impacts of climate extremes are the very ones who hold the solutions our world urgently needs.

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE

The Alliance of Peoples for the Climate is an articulation that brings together Indigenous, quilombolas, extractive communities, riverside (ribeirinha), beiradeira (riverbank dwellers), and urban youth leaders around a new collective pact for climate justice. Heir to the historic Alliance of Forest Peoples, created in the 1980s by Chico Mendes, Raoni Metuktire, Ailton Krenak, and other leaders, the new Alliance expands this legacy in the face of the global climate emergency, proposing paths for a sustainable and plural future.
